Albert
Einstein
He
was born at Ulm, Germany, on March 14, 1879. Later his family moved to Munich,
where he later began his schooling at the Luitpold Gymnasium. He continued his
education in Switzerland and entered the Swiss Federal Polytechnic School in
Zurich in 1896. He received his doctoral degree in
1905.
His
famous works include his Special Theory of Relativity in 1905 and his General
Theory of Relativity in 1916. He gained numerous awards in recognition of his
work, including the Copley Medal of the Royal Society of London in 1925, and the
Franklin Medal of the Franklin Institute in 1935. He also received many honorary
doctorates from European and American universities. He became a U.S. citizen in
1940 and retired in 1945. He died on April 18, 1955 at Princeton, New
Jersey.
Einstein's gifts inevitably resulted in him being alone intellectually,
for relaxation music played an important role in his life. He married Mileva
Maric in 1903 and they had a daughter and two sons, however their marriage was
dissolved in 1919. That same year
he married his cousin, Elsa Löwenthal, who died in
1936.
